The story of Amstel goes back to 1870, when the iconic beer was first brewed in Amsterdam. The name of the beer comes from the river Amstel that crosses through Amsterdam and of which the water was used for the first brews. Amstel quickly grew to become a success in The Netherlands. But the brand also expanded to all corners of the world through export, including Jordan.
Dr. Raouf Abujaber imported the first bottles of Amstel into Jordan in 1947. Amstel rapidly became very popular and this lead to the construction of the Amstel brewery in Zarqa. When opened in 1958, this was the first brewery outside The Netherlands to brew Amstel. Ever since, Amstel has been the undisputed number one beer in Jordan.
